Oglethorpe Point School - Georgia History Day

Our local elementary school will be holding their annual Georgia History Day the morning of Friday, February 7th.

I’m looking for volunteers to teach small groups of 3rd grade students, 2 or 3 in a group, a historical handmade craft that they can make in 20-30 mins, e.g. sewing a button on a felt bracelet, making pom poms, crocheting a bracelet, creating yarn dolls and octopus and quilting a square, etc., etc.

We usually have 4 classes visit throughout the morning; the kids are so proud of their accomplishments and are thrilled to take them away. Many of them have never held a sewing needle or tied knots. We start at about 8:30 a.m. with light refreshments, the first class comes through at 9:00 a.m., classes rotate every 40 minutes and we’re usually finished by noon. We’re then provided with lunch.

This is a fun morning and fulfills our Fiberarts purpose of providing resources and educational opportunities to members of the community. If you would like to volunteer, assist, or just need more information, please give me a call at (912) 996-2967 or email

Lane Wight would like to have some empty thread cones. If you have one that you are planning to throw out please save it for me. It doesn't matter if it is plastic or cardboard. Thanks

JANIE PRITCHARD I am looking for someone to join me for a one day workshop in Lakeland FL on February 7th. We will have to drive down the day before and back the day after. The “Bee Box” Workshop

Kathi Mendenhall will present the “Bee Box” workshop Tuesday, March 3, at 10:00 am. We will take a sandwich lunch break around noon, and then resume after lunch to finish.
The class is limited to 12 participants at the cost of $25.00 each, which covers the cost of kit, kitting and the class information.
Kathi will offer at the cost of $10.00 the class and the PDF, if participants want to learn the stitches but do the project their own way. Bring some linen or cotton necessary to learn the steps and stitches for the project. This is only after the 12 maximum participants is full.
Kathi will also have some sewing supplies or finished projects to sell to anyone who wants them, at the cost of no more than $5, (i.e. pin cushions, needle cases, etc.).
The proposed location for this workshop is the Nativity church, where we hold our regular monthly Fiber Arts meetings. This is to be verified and confirmed later.

I am attaching the printed pattern for Seafarers Hats. It was decided at the board meeting to extend some of our outreach projects. Anyone can contribute to this effort, and your response will be appreciated. I will collect any finished hats at the November general meeting and drop them off at the International Seafarers Center. They will be distributed as Christmas presents to the visiting boats during the holiday season. Thanks, Lainie
